Kingsport resident and established artist, B.J. Carruthers. B.J. says “I love the space I have in my new home. I have space to
paint, a porch for my flowers and I even have a little bird feeder outside.”
“As I sit on my little porch, the most wonderful thing I see is Bays Mountain. I’m planning to put it on paper soon. Painting is something I do because I like to do it. I get lost in it and it makes me happy. It’s in me so much, it’s like I have to do it. It helps me relax and keeps my brain working.
When the fog comes up in the morning, and the sun comes across the sky, the whole thing is a beautiful picture out my window. It just makes me happy to look at it and see all the shades of green. As the sky touches the mountains, it becomes a beautiful blue-green. It just makes me feel good. I love that I will never be without something beautiful to see out my window.
I have lived in Kingsport since 1948 so this is my home and I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. I chose to live at Asbury Place because my kids were worried about me living alone. They wanted me to have maintenance-free living and they wanted me to be with people. I’m still very involved with my church and the art community just as I have been for years. I’ve met a lot of nice people and made some new friends. I already knew a lot of people here before I moved in. I go to three meals a day and meet new people everyday. Living here is like having a new family and I’m enjoying it.”
